Make no mistake about it, the EU finally takes action where it matters. The kind of action one makes when “stretching” while sitting on a chair. How you can tell that, well not too difficult;
1. The statement on mideast conflict read by someone other than the EU President, while she takes to the floor when its purely about the Ukraine conflict and EU focused policies – and even there mostly aspirational targets rather than specific measures.
2. In relation to mideast policies you’ll find that all of the measures proposed can be summarised in the main in 2 elements; a) postures, encouraging parties to negotiate and supportive statements or b) throwing some cash around for the taking; in other words no meaningful measures on the ground that incentivise/disincentivise parties to follow the supported 2 state solution – as if this support in of itself gets the EU off the hook – or terminating the illegal/unprovoked Iran war (so same old same old “talk”, or should I say same old same old “stretch”). So rather than boldly following the U.S. bear, its now shackled in doing so ever so gingerly; that’s it.
Here’s the real question people should ask themselves (even before asking others) – and forgetting any specific conflict or perceptions, but just appreciating the level of change we all face in a world being reshaped at every level and pushed forcefully in all directions due to narrow ideologies and compounded with increasing disregard to international law/norms – is this the kind of leadership you feel represents this special moment in history? And here’s another one; is this EU leadership really focused on EU interests (short, medium and long term)? If that’s what you believe, then all I can say is; well good luck with that; and please do remember that I’m on that same boat too.
