It is quite curious that when you search public statements/analysis coming out of the intelligence community within the western alliance particularly the UK and US concerning the Ukraine war one can find plenty of materials online; however when considering the war in Gaza minimal information is available and where there are it is (when related to UK intelligence) the British PM that takes charge of publicising them and not intelligence chief or officials. Even when considering other European powers who continue to state civilians are used by terrorists as human shields in most if not all attacks within Gaza and beyond; the question would be this; what is the actual intelligence assessments on these allegations particularly considering the surge recently in their hightech reconnaissance missions within the region? In fact what is the intelligence assessments of government strategies overall with regards to regional instability and government actions taken filtering out all political narratives/views – obviously without endangering national security but irrespective of government insecurity. It seems to me that double standards – a term we see repeated everywhere when discussing the Mideast conflict – are applied where the narrative of these conflicts are concerned. It’s not only the diplomats that are being largely ignored (or shut down), it seems that even the intelligence community is being “whipped” into control so as not to deviate from the official line/narrative in reporting on the conflict. Couple all that with what is deemed acceptable/unacceptable to say about the conflict and its roots and you begin to see how basic democratic principles are being hijacked/released by the political establishment at will and without any form of accountability or transparency. Remember basic values are also a matter of national security because they are part-and-parcel of the national identity; or so we’re led to believe.

So the suggestion from this end is basically this; at some point we really need to have a public debate to review openly 3 specific/fundamental issues;

  • Threats on free speech vs. hate speech which gets deliberately confused with political opinions/narratives
  • Accountability of all civil servants up/down the chain of command when it comes to disseminating disinformation or derogatory statements against any segment of society or related to false public policy narratives.
  • How our public institutions & public servants are being sidelined and/or prevented from sharing information that does not follow the official narrative.

True democracy is important but it’s also a quite vulnerable mode of governance, so we need to always keep an eye on how to strengthen it inline with the evolution of the type of threats we see everyday within and beyond our borders.

Just a thought!
