A truly shocking/disgusting attack that takes the life of a passionate politician who dedicated his life to serving his country and community and dies while doing the job he loved. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sir David Amess yet I suspect many will continue to remember him through his many contributions as a decent civil servant with plenty in the way of integrity and leadership. As for attacks like this many seem to be focused on the issue of security of MPs which is all right and proper. However – and though we have yet to understand the motivation involved in this cowardly act – we also need to consider how politics has become so divisive and personal in this day and age. We really need to review standards for political debate within the political establishment who in effect set the tone for the entire country in terms of what is and what is not acceptable. No one should be robbed of their life because of his/her views and/or political affiliation and we should focus on bringing back a level of decency, integrity and respect to the way we do politics.
For now I pray for all affected by this tragic incident and may Sir David Amess RIP.
