A very interesting analysis with Germany’s complicated relation with its own flag driven by its complicated relations with its own past. Though I am certainly no expert on the topic on specifics of Germany’s political history but have some knowledge of WWII from reading books, watching documentaries and visiting Auschwitz I do – or claim to – understand the dynamics at play here because another symptom are policies that seem to be affected by these strong shackles to historical trauma which in effect – again in my opinion – is actually having the exact reverse effect of the intended purpose. So what I’m suggesting here is that Germany, and particularly the new generation – should NOT experience life bearing the scares of the past they did not create – certainly learning hard lessons from it but NOT allowing it to dictate the direction of their future which seems to be the comfortable model of the older generation and their belief system. So in a nutshell nothing wrong with being proud of your flag, while recognizing lessons of the past and not allowing policies that shackle you to realities of the past rather than realities of the present or threaten the repetition of the same mistakes but in a different form. Resolve the root cause and not the symptom and don’t allow the flag or history to be reclaimed by the wrong bunch and use that as a “hunch”……I do totally understand JĂĽrgen Klopp’s comments (someone I respect immensely) but I believe that its the wrong approach with all due respect.
