This repeated model of sanctions affecting populations all over the world is truly disgusting and must end. It can no longer be acceptable in this day and age that people are treated as collateral whether in military attacks or sanctions that affect vital infrastructure. They say there are rules in war – though we’re seeing little evidence of respecting those to date – but I would argue that there should also be rules in peace time where the civilian population is being used to pressure any government into submission in a geopolitical power play. Sanctions must be tempered/controlled and should only be implemented via the UN and not unilaterally because human rights are at play here. We need to start considering our own position had we been in the same situation not only in this matter but when passing judgement on many other foreign policy challenges we face today and perhaps we wouldn’t be facing these in the first place.
