Brilliant Speech! Fundamentals of rules based order have always been clear to everyone, so is the need for UN reform; the problem is allowing powerful states to dictate and distort them at will for reasons of self interest. This problem did not start today but the consequences are merely more stark and consequential short, medium and long term and they’ve already begun. The solution is actually quite simple; a) the recognition that the UN in its current incarnation is totally/entirely ineffective in preventing the constant damage being done daily to global order affecting developed/developing nations alike at every level and more importantly where lives are being lost in every corner and in every second due to inaction b) a coalition of nations under the auspices of the UN need to come together to maintain peace/security in this moment of a global emergency and this based on UN General Assembly “Uniting for Peace” (Resolution 377A) where the Security Council fails to act (a mechanism that was heavily utilised during the war in Ukraine to bypass Russian vetoes). In other words there are ways to bypass UN deadlocks and complaining about this issue and questions of reform can no longer be an excuse for inaction, unless of course thats the whole point of it. The threats are real and NOT “can” but “will” be devastating if no immediate actions are taken to help reverse the current path before there is no way back. I’ve read plenty about WWII and for me it feels like we’re all heading towards a similar moment though much more devastating scenario where authoritarian instincts, expansionist threats, extremist ideologies intent on igniting cultural/religious friction with the help of AI, and AI in itself branching into other threats; all the above pushes us all back to colonial times of the past but at a moment in history where such trends face a very different demographic/political/military and technological structures/capabilities not to mention the memory of hard earned lessons of history. So we either need to find solutions quickly or know full well where we’re heading and kinda “let the chips fall where they may”….
