State of the Union: Alice Weidel Delivers a Strong Speech (in English)

‘Apocalyptic Horsemen’: Alice Weidel Delivers Stark Warning About Europe’s Future at CPAC

First time I see Alice Weidel giving a speech in English, great stuff. But a few confusing parts for me; talking about values, freedom of speech and democracy under attack. Well great to see her defending these values but what I don’t understand is how these values can be represented by such a party. Attacks on migration is an obvious/unifying choice between right wing parties around the world so thats not news, what is news to me is defending family values and attacking all those who threaten it when I understand that in her personal life she does not abide strictly by these family/Christian values entirely; I have no issue with that in the slightest but it just doesn’t sound right to many when she raises (sorry “champions”) such an issue publicly – well my opinion anyway. But the overall theme is unmistakable – or so I claim – which is that these sorts of parties are high on soundbites intended to promote reactionary tendencies but low in actually coming up with compatible policies – national and foreign – cause they tend to get into a jam not because they intend to promote justice and pragmatic strategies but rather basing them on purely narrow ideological – and some would say “racist” – biases. Yes, talk democracy, western values and freedoms to your hearts content, but the tail end of this or any other speech comes plenty in the way of red lines which suggests to me that the AfD may actually be reflecting an alternative path for Germany to the values they preach at the head (or beginning) of their speech. Now why would I suggest such a thing? Simple, I believe we’ve seen it in Germany before.

Just a thought.
