What we see here in my opinion is by no means a unique case of journalistic bias but a constant/consistent pattern in the media. I do not have a problem with left or right leaning coverage of events and politics in general; this is part and parcel of democratic governance. However – and irrespective of the politics and/or event involved – when media coverage begins falsifying realities and/or guiding reporters with a stick through influence (internal or external) there “lies” the problem. We have to consider 2 things;
- Any form of influence where the media is concerned specifically when it relates to reporting, is unwarranted and should be investigated to ensure we as consumers of information in a democratic society are protected against any form of disinformation/bias, political or otherwise; same concept should apply equally to politicians who influence governance and legislate on our behalf
- When our governance model is hijacked by individuals abusing the system to impose flawed narratives, democracy becomes in the firing line.
**(Oh I forgot)** And of course there are the likes of Piers Morgan who’s less interested in right/left/centre or any or any sense of analysis/reporting but is disgustingly working the conflict to gain viewership; pure/simple. You know, the kind of guy who stands for nothing and everything at the same time.
Once upon a time when I collaborated with my local UK Liberal Democrats party as a potential to become a parliamentary candidate for the I was shocked during our preparatory meetings to learn that the party had 2 “factions” one pro Israel and another pro-Palestine; my response was “hey, I thought we’re in Britain”. This is not only about protecting our democracy but also to protect our values and ensure we’re able to be honest/powerful brokers when influencing global events/laws and/or help resolve foreign conflicts. As I always say; when we begin to import/internalise foreign conflicts we undermine our own foundational values and our democracy will – or should I say “is being” – slowly chipped away while we’re busy planning for our next gadget or holiday break. For heavens sake lets be slightly less consumer oriented and slightly more values oriented – and that’s a message for me too.
Just a thought.
