A key pillar of Democracy that cannot be taken for granted. In this day and age it is no longer sufficient to have NGO’s assigned with the responsibility to protect press freedoms, journalism and media; now there needs to be national apolitical body with apolitical leadership and the highest levels of authority to help set the standards for media content and developing protections necessary for journalists, individuals working in the sector as well as protecting the entire info eco system itself away from toxic political influence (internal or external) and disinformation.
This is not merely a matter of protecting a governance model but also a matter of national security and requires leadership with an impeccable track record. In this context it is also critical that there are clear guidelines and oversight when national media outlets are acquired by foreign businesses and/or individuals to ensure they do not create vulnerabilities whether it relates to corruption or disinformation.
In brief celebrating press freedoms day needs to be more meaningful and come with a new vision to help make a positive contribution towards change.
