A disgusting incident experienced by a respected Historian Henry Rousso when entering the United States and was threatened with deportation at Houston airport. Nothing captures the significance of the moment and also reflects the new times we live in better than his own comments about the incident; “The United States seems no longer quite the United States.” As a native of Egypt myself like Mr Rousso I feel it as shameful as the eviction of many Egyptian Jews from Egypt in the early 1960’s despite their enormous contributions to a vibrant multicultural/multiethnic society which helped shape modern Egypt pre the 1960’s and religious harmony (not just tolerance) was a big part of it. Since then extremism/corruption reined in Egypt-you see religious isolationism does have very real destructive forces and there is plenty of historical evidence to support this.
